Most folks first encounter with government in California is the dreaded Department of Motor Vehicles, aka DMV. Always make an appointment online before physically visiting the offices or you lose 2-6 hours of your life.

If you live in California for any length of time, you will eventually have to deal with various types of contractors. One of the most useful resources is the state's license checking service

For its size, Sunnyvale has a very active city library.

The San Francisco Bay Area is a world-renowned travel destination and also the home of the (in)famous Silicon Valley .  In addition to the cultural attractions of "the City" and the technology thrills of "the Valley", the Bay Area contains many nature attractions.

Going south on CA Highways 85 and 17, in less than an hour (on a dry day, not during rush hour) you reach the home of many a Northern California surfer: Santa Cruz Travelling another hour south on CA Highway 1, you get to Moss Landing which is the outlet for the Elkhorn Slough, a fascinating watershed that also often hosts rare birds, especially during the Spring and Fall at the Moon Glow Dairy. Year-around docent-led tours of the slough are available on weekends at 10AM and 1PM, rain or shine (Nov-Mar its often rain, so be prepared).
